Antique Bed - Room Makeover Begins!

Do you want to hear a funny story?

The week after my hubby and I
returned from our honeymoon,
the dishwasher in his condo
(now, our condo) went out.
When my new hubby returned from work,
I asked him what we should do.

He said, "Call a plumber."

WHAT??????
I had never heard those three words uttered
(in that order) in my life!
I, instead, called my dad:  fixer-extraordinaire!
As it turned out, it was an electrical problem
- not a plumbing one.
My dad was able to make the repair for us.

My hubby & I have been married for almost 20 years,
and my dad is still fixing things for us!
Today, he helped me put up a bed.

My in-laws had a beautiful antique bed
that they were giving away.
My mother-in-law was seeking a different "look"
in that particular room.
She asked if I wanted the pretty, 100+ year old bed.
YES, please...

This week, I began the room makeover for
my teenage son.
I want to give his room a fresh, updated look
before he goes off to college next year.
I took most things out of his room.
The mattress & boxspring on the floor
and his desk were all that were left.

Early this morning, I drove the antique bed
home to Santa Barbara.
My dad, son, and I brought all the pieces in
so we could assemble the antique bed in my son's room.

Because the bed is over 100 years old,
we had to do a bit of "MacGyver - ing";
that is what my family calls it when we have
to be creatively resourceful.

As we assembled the bed in my son's room,
I oohed and aahed over the gorgeous, intricate details
on the headboard and footboard.

The new (old) bed even has beautiful side-rails.

Finally, the bed was done.
It looks fantastic and it is a GREAT start
to the room makeover!

This bed will also be a great guest bed
when my son goes off to college...
but I'm not quite ready to think about that.
Not just yet.

In the meantime, my son can learn some
handyman ("MacGyver") skills,
so that one day he won't tell his new bride to call a plumber!

  3. Oh wow! I love that bed! It's really beautiful. I know your son will enjoy having his room refreshed. I know what you're trying to do though. You're hoping he won't want to go away to school and instead go somewhere close to home right? Ha Ha. Just kidding, I'm sure you will cherish his last year at home.

    1. Haha! I do wish he would stay, but deep down I know it's better for him to spread his wings and fly. It will be good for him, so I just want to make his last year at home as wonderful as possible.
      Hugs,
      Michelle

  7. oh my.....I could have written that story! I came from a "make do" family, married a guy who rarely fixes anything himself(we are/were old when we married). Sometimes I look at him like he jumped out of a box!! Too funny....
The bed is gorgeous....you are so lucky!
    Be blessed,

    1. I have a Victorian "soul" as well. I even had my wedding reception in a refurbished Victorian Mansion on Main Street in Santa Monica. I suppose we are kindred spirits. I feel so fortunate that my mother-in-law was willing to pass this pretty bed on to my family when she decided to redecorate.

  10. Gorgeous! Does your son know what a wonderful treat it is to sleep in such a pretty, antique bed?! My son sleeps in a 1980's brass bed and I don't think he realizes the beauty of it. It is mine though and forever will be!!

  12. Hi Michelle, Your antique bed is gorgeous! So glad you didn't paint it like lots of people are doing these days. :) I love the detail of those antique high back beds and own 3 myself. My son sleeps in an 1875 bed and is part of a 3 piece set that I bought at a Victorian house auction. I was so excited and the only thing he could say was "I didn't even ask for that, I just wanted a bunk bed." Can you believe that?
    Have a great weekend,
    Gina
