5 Steps to a Room Makeover

Are you ready to give a room in your home
a makeover?
Simply follow these 5 easy steps
to make a complete change!

Step 1:  Choose your "inspiration" for the space.

Whether it is a view, a photograph, a pillow,
or something else, you need to choose something
to be your "guiding" source for the room.
This will help you choose colors, themes, and/or
an overall "feel" for the room.

For example, I am currently giving my
teenage son's room a makeover.
The photograph above was taken
by the beach near our home.
It is light and bright and soothing.
These are all things I want my son's room to be.
Both my son & I love this photo.
It is a great jumping off point for his room makeover
and a wonderful source of inspiration for his room.

Based on the inspiration piece (this photo),
we have chosen a color scheme for the room.
We will be using soothing blues and grays
- like the sea and sky.
In addition there will be some sand-colored, light browns.
Finally, the room will have some accents of white
- like the puffy clouds and the ocean waves.

Ask yourself what one item can be your
inspiration for your room???
How can you use that inspiration
to guide your choices for the space?

Step 2: Go into the room and decide
what items will stay and what things will go or change.

Sometimes when you makeover a room,
EVERYTHING
will be different.
However, often times there are elements of the
previous design that may be used in the makeover.

Right away, try to take out the items which will
NOT be used in the makeover.
Also, redo any pieces or items that can be used
in a different way in the newly designed space.

For example, most of the items in my son's room
will not be used again in his bedroom.
Immediately, I took those pieces out to the garage
and some items were brought to the Goodwill for donation.

There are however a few pieces that we will use
in the newly designed space, including his desk.
His desk is a sentimental piece because it was
handmade for my son by his grandfather.
Additionally, it is an extremely useful item (a good place to complete homework and fill out college applications).

Fortunately, the wood stain is perfect in the new space.
It is almost the same color as the sand in the
inspiration photo.
Of course, a useful item can always be changed
to fit in with the new decor.
Never forget the power of paint!!!

Step 3: This is a fun step!
This is when you make three lists:
what you have;
what the space needs;
& what you want the space to have.

I like to make a 3-columned list.

This is when you search for the things that are
actually going to go in the room.
I like to use Pinterest.
I also tear pages out of magazines and catalogs.

This is the creative stage of a room makeover
and it is a time of anticipation.
This is the step during which you get to daydream
about what the finished space will look like.
I'll be honest, this is my favorite part...

Step 5: This is where it all comes together!
I make my final choices for the space.
Then, I like to create a "mood board"
or "inspiration board" for the room.
I use my iPad and I use an app called Morpholio Board
not a sponsored post - it's just what I use.
When I put together a mood board,
I make sure the room has a cohesive makeover.
I love it!
Finally, I can DO IT!
I can start painting, buying, and
completing the makeover.
VOILA'!

What do you think?
Is there anything you like to do
when you are planning a room makeover?

  3. Those are all good steps to follow. I've never made a mood board before. I didn't realize there is an app for that. I like the mood board that you created.
