New Kitchen Shelving Piece

What do you do when you have
a big (7 foot), blank wall in your kitchen?
Well, if you're me,
you call your dad as soon as possible!

My dad (aka guru of ALL home-related tasks)
took a little time to think about it.
I thought about what I wanted and gave my input.
With two brains working on it,
we came up with the idea of a narrow shelving unit.

I love my home.
I hope that my little cottage by the sea is
my "forever home".
I do NOT, however, love my kitchen.
Hopefully, my husband and I will eventually have the time and means to make some major changes in here.

In the meantime, my new kitchen shelving unit
makes great use of some previously wasted space.

Here it is!
Didn't my Dad do a fantastic job???
He really is the best!
He stained the shelves to match our new
kitchen table from Pottery Barn.
Right at the beginning of 2014,
my husband and I purchased
the Brayden Extending Rectangular Dining Table in Honey.
Photo from Pottery Barn Catalog:

Because the table and shelves are made from
different woods, the shelves look
much darker than the dining table.
For now, I really like it.
Later on, I may decide to take some
light-colored Annie Sloan Chalk Paint to the shelves.
We shall see...
(Please don't pay attention to the terrible wall color in my kitchen - which will be changing VERY soon.
Also, please ignore my yucky tile.
I HOPE that will also change soon, too.)

The burlap wall hanging was on sale at Pottery Barn
before Halloween last year.
Of course I had to get it, since I am having
a major romance with burlap!
I love how it looks over the new kitchen shelving unit.
(I will need to find something similar for Christmas!)

On the top shelf, I have a holder
which I've had for several years.
I bought it at my friend's Southern Living at Home Party.

On the holder, I have a cream pumpkin tureen
(from Cost Plus World Market).
The pumpkin is filled with
silk hydrangeas and cream raffia pumpkins.
At the bottom, I have a little metal squirrel which I purchased years ago from a little shop in Solvang, California.

I also have my new candle from Bath and Body Works.
I bought it yesterday and it's called Sweater Weather.

My top shelf also has this pretty vase sitting
on top of a slender burlap runner.
The vase is supposed to look like a French confit jar,
but it is really a vase from Southern Living at Home.
I love this piece so much that it stays out all year long!

The middle shelf has an old locker bin.
It was a recent purchase from an
antique shop in Old Towne Orange, California.
Now, it holds some of my favorite cookbooks
instead of stinky socks and dirty shorts!  *wink

Beside my "new" locker bin, I have an adorable find from Anthropologie.
It looks like an old milk jar, but it's really a
set of stackable (and colorful) measuring cups!

This is one of those items that I don't use
(because I have a set of everyday measuring cups).
I just have it because it is so cute!
I love the "surprise" colors inside
& it makes me happy to have it in my kitchen!
 :)

The middle shelf also has a decorative tray,
some live burgundy mums,
and a couple of pinecones to
give the shelves some warmth and autumnal ambiance.

The bottom shelf has a cookie jar that I recently purchased from Pottery Barn (on massive clearance - SCORE!).
Usually, I am a 4th grade teacher
- but this school year I am at home (for medical reasons).
So, I have decided that this year
I am going to become the
"Homemade Cookie Queen".
It's too hot to even turn on the oven right now!!!
However, as soon as the temperatures drop,
that jar is going to be FULL of special "mom-love" tokens!

My bottom shelf also has a metal drink carrier,
an antique milk bottle,
and a stack of well-loved & frequently used bowls
(from Williams-Sonoma).

On each side, the shelving unit is flanked by large,
grapevine pumpkins (from Target - several years ago).

In addition, there is a large hook
from Pottery Barn
that my Dad helped me attach to the side
of the shelving unit.
This is my dishtowel holder.
Currently, it has my favorite red striped towel on it
(which I found at Ikea for 79 cents!!!
Yes, I bought a STACK of these!).

I LOVE my new kitchen shelving unit -
and I like how I was able to decorate it for fall.
I hope you like it, too!!!

Au Revoir,
Michelle
